I’m sure we can all think of friends or colleagues who have made wrong choices that landed them in a mess. Sometimes, we can look back on our own lives and see past mistakes and regrets.
God is never surprised by what we have done or what we’re doing, and He will not give up on us.
Ever get discouraged and disheartened because you feel like your life doesn’t seem to measure up? Dwelling on the negatives we tend to think we’re worthless nobodies – and left to ourselves, that would be true! But be encouraged today – worthless nobodies are just the kind of people God uses. If you think about it, that’s all He has to work with!
1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (GNT) God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and He chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful. He chose what the world looks down on and despises and thinks is nothing, in order to destroy what the world thinks is important. This means that no one can boast in God’s presence.
GOD USES ORDINARY PEOPLE
Again and again in the Scriptures we find living proof that God can and will use anyone, regardless of their past actions, class or occupation. In Judges 6, we’re introduced to Gideon who was fearful! It was wartime, and Gideon was hiding when an angel of the Lord proclaimed to him: “Mighty hero the Lord is with you!”
The angel went on to tell him that he was chosen by God and he would be the one to save Israel. Imagine Gideon’s astonishment: “How can I save Israel? Lord, I come from a nobody family, and I’m the lowest nobody in my family. And You’re going to use me?”
All of God’s people are ordinary people who have been made extraordinary by the purpose He has given them. – Oswald Chambers
After God enlisted the nobody Gideon, He got a nobody army. Then God took those nobodies and anointed them and they won the battle! God takes us in our weak and imperfect state and uses us so He alone can be glorified.
GOD CAN USE ANYONE, INCLUDING YOU
God is looking for nobodies who will become somebodies in His hands! God puts His divine treasure in earthen vessels – on purpose! He does it so that when great things happen, the people around us will come to only one absolute conclusion: “All I know is that it can’t possibly be him. It can’t possibly be her. He’s not that smart. She’s not that strong. It’s got to be God.”
2 Corinthians 4:7 (AMP) We possess this precious treasure in frail, human vessels that the grandeur and exceeding greatness of the power may be shown to be from God and not from ourselves.
Every believer can experience the power and presence of God who chooses and uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Can God use your life? Yes He can! However, it must first be His to use! God does not exist to fulfill our purposes; we exist to fulfill His purposes. The reason why you are here is because God wants to demonstrate His power and majesty through your life and use you for His glory!
God is not looking for golden vessels, or silver vessels, all He’s looking for is yielded vessels!
– Kathryn Kuhlman
Despite our flaws God can still use us, and in the Bible He shows us many examples of imperfect people He’s used from all walks of life.
Consider who He used:
*Matthew, a government employee, who became an apostle.
*Gideon, a common laborer, who became a champion for God.
*Deborah, a housewife, who became a judge.
*Moses, a stutterer, who became a mighty deliverer.
*Jeremiah, a child, who boldly spoke as the Lord’s prophet.
*Aaron, a servant, who became God’s anointed spokesman.
*Nicodemus, a Pharisee, who became a defender of the faith.
*David, a shepherd boy, who became a dynamic leader and king.
*Hosea, a marital failure, who prophesied to save Israel.
*Joseph, a prisoner, who became prime minister.
*Esther, an orphan, who became a queen.
*Elijah, who battled with depression, yet became a heroic man of God.
*Joshua, an assistant, who became an awesome leader.
*James and John, common fishermen, who became close disciples of Christ.
*Abraham, a nomad, who became the father of many nations.
*John the Baptist, a vagabond, who became the forerunner of Jesus.
*Isaiah, a man of unclean lips, who prophesied the birth of God’s Messiah.
*Jacob, a deceiver, who God transformed and made the father of the twelve tribes of Israel.
*Mary, an unknown virgin, who gave birth to the Son of God.
*Paul, a vindictive persecutor of God’s people, who became the greatest missionary in history and authored two-thirds of the New Testament.
If God chose only talented people with no character flaws, then the credit would inevitably go to the people and not to the Lord. By choosing flawed people with a questionable past and a shaky present, God alone gets all the glory when they accomplish amazing things by His power.
GOD’S FAVORITE INSTRUMENTS ARE NOBODIES
If we try to operate in our own strength and not God’s, we risk taking the glory and credit for ourselves. Apart from God’s grace we can’t do anything! We all have our limits whether we like to admit it or not. We like to think we can handle anything. We can’t! We like to think we can go forever. We can’t! We like to think we can stand up to anything. We can’t!
Zechariah 4:6 (TLB) Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord Almighty – you will succeed because of My Spirit.
God wants us to walk in humility and freely acknowledge if there is any power, it is the power that is in God alone, and not in us. God doesn’t need to make us into superstars in order to use us.
Instead, He’s looking for men and women who have hearts that declare: “Lord, I’m nothing without You! I’m a nobody. Apart from You Lord, I’m a big zero!”
When God finds such a person, they become excellent candidates for the grace of God. Then something supernatural and extraordinary happens—that nobody is promoted to the ranks of God’s somebodies to make an indelible impact on the world.
THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS PERFECT PEOPLE
All the perfect people are in heaven! The only ones on earth are those with flaws and weaknesses. The really good news: God’s life-changing power sets the captives free, tears down walls, restores marriages, rebuilds families, lifts up the downtrodden, heals broken hearts, forgives the deepest sins, imparts hope in the darkest hour, and gives light in the valley of death.
God wants the world to see what He can do through people whose trust is in Him alone. And that’s why He delights in people like us! The weaker we are, the more the Lord can do through us. Today, let Him do His mighty work in you, and watch Him display His awesomeness through you.
